In 1876, August and Margaret Rabou moved from Kearney, Nebraska to Cheyenne, Wyoming. August, a stone mason, helped build the Union Pacific Depot and the State Capitol building. The Rabous homesteaded east of Cheyenne in Albin, and in a few generations, George Rabou was raising quality cattle and quarter horses there.
The next two generations of men built the ranch up, culminating in Ron’s father, Ed, taking over the operation after graduating from college. Tragedy struck in 1999 when Ed passed away, leaving 26 year old Ron to navigate his family’s agriculture business.
Rabou Farms came out of that challenging time, as Ron and his now-wife, Julie, were dating and making plans for the future. Realizing that the ranch’s business model had stagnated, they made the decision for Ron to leave the ranch. He earned his BA in Ag Business at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
From there, Ron and Julie jumped into farming on a wing and a prayer and with the belief they could figure things out together. They didn’t know how to farm, didn’t have the facilities, didn’t have the right equipment, and didn’t have the right kind of land. They did, however, have a strong work ethic, tenacity, grit, integrity, and faith, and those traits carried them well through the difficult process of leaving a family operation to start an entirely new business.
Through many sleepless nights, endless days, and calculated risks, Rabou Farms is a clean and well-kept operation that takes care of the Rabou family and its community of people. As a member of the organic farming industry, Rabou Farms plays its part to ensure the food Wyomingits eat is both safe and healthy, cultivating relationships with customers while producing high quality products.
A testament to Ron and Julie’s hard work and dedication, the Farm headquarters now sits in the same place Ron’s grandparents lived for sixty-two years. A Wyoming family operation to its very core, Rabou Farms is a cornerstone to the southeast Wyoming agriculture community.
